In his book, "George Bird Evans Introduces," the author relates this anecdote from Franz Osthaus, son of my favorite painter of setters and pointers: "While (Edmund Osthaus) was vice-president of the Continental Field Trial Club, the first prize for their annual event was a portrait of the winner painted by him. His association with the Cub ended when the United States became involved in WWI. Although a loyal citizen, (Osthaus) had been born in Germany, and that was too much for some people. He and his family were ostracized by many, and he was asked to resign from the Club. This was a rugged period in our lives, and it left an indelible impression on me."
